Over-processing refers to a situation where the chemical solution is left on the hair for an extended period, leading to excessive alteration of the hair structure. This process can result in a range of negative outcomes, such as hair breakage, extreme dryness, and a loss of elasticity. The chemical reactions that occur during texturizing treatments, such as relaxing or perming, are time-sensitive; if not monitored closely, they can go beyond the desired level of alteration, which compromises hair health.

While applying too much product or using the wrong chemical can cause issues, they do not precisely capture the essence of over-processing.
